I felt massive sympathy with John Updike as a golfer. He did not mention his handicapps, but I would imagine mid-teens at best, as he used 5-iron ( or massie) for remaining 150 yards. Words like skitters and ricochets were fresh word for me, as a non-native English speaker cum golfer. Desparation accompanying such shots are well depicted in his prose, and I recognized why the Nerw Yorker hired him, and asked to be a regular writer. His image of autumn golf courses in New England was great.......
